Texas Right to Life to Honor Governor Bush

Houston -- In appreciation for the Pro-Life efforts of Governor George W. Bush, the Texas Right to Life Committee will honor him at a luncheon in Dallas on May 15, 1999. The event will benefit the Texas Right to Life Educational Fund's statewide media campaign. The media campaign consists of a series of carefully produced television commercials that address women facing the fear and confusion of unplanned motherhood. The commercials are tagged with an 800 number where women can receive the information, resources, and help they need to make the Choice for Life.

Governor Bush, in a recent interview with the AP, stated that he supports a constitutional ban on abortion with exceptions for rape, incest, and life of the mother. However, he stated that the political climate and the public attitude toward abortion make the passage of a constitutional amendment presently unfeasible. This is certainly the case as it takes two-thirds of the House and two-thirds of the Senate, followed by three-fourths of the state legislatures, to pass a constitutional amendment.

Despite this, the Governor is taking all possible measures to help change the hearts and minds of America by supporting a project that has proven to shift public opinion toward a more Pro-Life ethic and assist women in choosing life for their unborn children. The most stunning example of the success of this project has been in Michigan where a 40% reduction in the abortion rate and a 15% shift in the public attitude concerning abortion have occurred as a result of the Pro-Life television ad campaign. Texas Right to Life is working vigorously to raise the millions necessary to saturate the media markets in our state. With the help of Governor Bush, Texas is moving in a positive way to help women, save lives, and educate the public about the dignity and sanctity of human life.

Dr. Graham, president of the Texas Right to Life Committee, commenting on the fundraising event, said, " The Governor's taking time from an incredibly crowded schedule to attend a luncheon sponsored by Texas Right to Life indicates the degree of his commitment to the Cause of Life. His veto of legislation at the end of the last session of the Texas legislature that would have effectively legalized involuntary euthanasia in our state was a ringing affirmation of his leadership in the defense of innocent human life. He and his staff have been actively involved this present session to ensure that the law relating to advanced directives will guarantee that patients requesting life-saving procedures from their doctors would by law receive such treatment. Because of his support, it now seems that such protection will now become the law in Texas."

Dr. Graham continued, "The Governor has also supported a Parental Notification statute and has cooperated with Pro-Life groups around the state in working for its passage. He actively promotes adoption as an alternative to abortion and supports abstinence only sex education programs in Texas high schools. Texas Right to Life takes the occasion of its Dallas luncheon to express its gratitude for the Governor's leadership in the passage of these measures and for his vigorous defense of innocent human life born and unborn. He is providing the leadership from the governor's office that Texas so desperately needs. The presence of Governor Bush at the luncheon in Dallas will certainly enhance our ability to air these life-saving ads. It will also provide the opportunity for Texas Right to Life and the citizens of Texas to express our thanks for his leadership role in the cause of Life."
